The Civil War left many Virginians homeless, fatherless, or destitute. Many of Virginia’s young men died in the struggle. Those pictured below experienced the bitterness of war, whether through loss of life, loss of home, or loss of family. Their stories are featured in the HistoryMobile.



         

 

While consolation for the hardships of war came slowly, the Civil War brought freedom to Virginia. Over time, the reunited nation healed and began a path towards prosperity, strength, and worldwide respect. Those pictured below distinguished themselves during and after the war.
