Civil War sesquicentennial brings millions to Virginia

An economic impact study of Virginia’s Civil War sesquicentennial shows the commemoration brought more than $290 million and 3.7 million people to Virginia. Programs marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War generated more than $8.4 million in state tax revenue and nearly $5 million in local tax revenue. Sesquicentennial events, as well as visitor spending in Virginia related to the commemoration contributed positively to the Commonwealth’s economy in terms of sales, jobs, and tax revenue.

A Sesquicentennial Finale Concert will be held outdoors on the South Portico of the Virginia State Capitol on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) at 6:30 pm. Narrated by acclaimed historian James I. Robertson, Jr. and featuring the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the concert combines music, words, and images in a profound exploration of the Civil War. 2015 Signature Conference to air live on CSPAN3

The 2015 Signature Conference, "Causes Won and Lost: The End of the Civil War," will be broadcast live on CSPAN3 on Saturday, April 18, starting at 8:45 a.m. The conference has been sold out since December, so this is great opportunity to be part of it. If you can't watch live, the entire day's coverage will be re-broadcast at 6:00 p.m. that evening.


Bells to ring across the nation on April 9 at 3:15 p.m.

Bells will ring across the nation on Thursday, April 9 as part of the National Park Service's initiative, "Bells Across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox." Bells will begin ringing in Appomattox at 3:00 pm, then be answered by bells at churches and historic sites across the nation. Participating sites in Virginia include the State Capitol, where bells will ring at the historic Bell Tower in Capitol Square on April 9 at 3:15 p.m. for four minutes (each minute symbolizing a year of war).

The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission is pleased to announce that the Virginia State Capitol will participate in the National Park Service's national initiative, "Bells across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox." Bells will ring at the historic Bell Tower in Capitol Square on April 9 at 3:15 p.m. for four minutes (each minute symbolizing a year of war) as the nation comes together to mark the end of the Civil War and the beginning of freedom and reunion.
