Park Historian Patrick Schroeder will narrate the events that unfolded on the morning of April 9 just west of the village. This was the final battle in the Eastern Theater of the war and produced approximately 2,000 casualties. The Union victory was brought about thanks to a heroic march by the Army of the James, including seven regiments of United States Colored Troops (USCTs), and their ability stop the Confederates from advancing any farther west, leading to General Lee’s decision to surrender that afternoon in the village. Presented by Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
